What is the API 6A CRA standard?

API 6A CRA is a supplement to API 6A, covering a group of high-performance alloys – specifically, the age-hardened nickel alloys, including Alloy 718, Alloy 725 and Alloy 925, as well as Alloys 716, 935 and 945. From a material supplier’s perspective, this standard addresses the most important aspects of metal properties: manufacturing process, chemical composition, mechanical properties, microstructure and test conditions.

API is the American Petroleum Institute. Founded in 1919, this trade association aims to promote safety throughout the global oil and natural gas industry. One of API’s primary activities is to bring together experts in the field to develop and maintain standards covering materials and operating procedures.

API 6A is a large document, over 400 pages long, covering all aspects of material specifications for wellhead equipment and Christmas trees. It goes into detail on the requirements for specific components such as tubing and casing hangers, valve bodies and bonnets, valve bodies, locking screws, flanges, valve shafts, clamps and connectors. It also covers component identification and marking, general dimensional control and operating parameters.
