S31803 is a 22% chromium duplex stainless steel and can also be referenced to DIN 1.4462 and ASTM A182 F51 when supplied as round bar.

Developed in the 1930s for pulp and paper applications, it has twice the strength and significantly improved corrosion resistance compared to the more common 304/316 stainless steels. The pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) is a convenient way to compare the general corrosion resistance of different alloys, and is calculated based on the chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content. S31803 has a PREN value of up to 34, compared to 25 for 316, reflecting significantly improved corrosion resistance. This makes them an excellent choice for engineers looking for the right material for corrosive environments. Their applications have expanded to include marine applications, the food and chemical processing industry, and general engineering.

The alloy can be produced to a tighter composition range, ensuring the product always achieves the best possible corrosion resistance – by controlling the chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content to the highest levels within the specification. This grade is referenced to S32205 and ASTM A182 F60, although still to DIN 1.4462.

S32205, which can also be supplied as S31803 – is dual certified. Apmetal has duplex stainless steel S32205 (2205) available in round bars from 5/8”-20” (15.87-508mm) in diameter, in plates up to 3” (76.2mm) thick, as well as pipes with specified sizes, flanges and fittings.
