Stainless steel (inox) symbols and common applications and specifications:

17-4 PH®: Is an alloy stainless steel belonging to the Martensitic stainless steel group, with special properties designed to provide an excellent combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties at temperatures up to 600°F (316°C), good toughness in both base metal and welds, and short-time, low-temperature heat treatment to minimize warping and scaling.

Mechanical properties: 17-4PH steel is capable of achieving very high tensile strength, from 1000 to 1300Mpa, depending on the heat treatment (hardening), which gives the steel good durability in high load applications. After heat treatment this steel can reach hardness up to 40-45 HRC

Applications of 17-4 PH® stainless steel: This versatile material is widely used in the aerospace, chemical, petrochemical, food processing, paper and general metalworking industries. 17-4 PH stainless steel can be heat treated at a variety of temperatures to develop a variety of properties. Eight standard heat treatment methods have been developed.

Chemical composition of 17-4PH martensitic steel:

- Cr (Chromium): 15-17%

- Ni (Nickel): 3-5%

- Cu (Copper): 3-5%

- Nb (Niobium): Usually in small proportions to improve corrosion resistance

- Fe (Iron): Remaining

AISI 309 | 1.4828 | UNS S30900: Is a heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel. It has improved heat and oxidation resistance, carburizing resistance and high temperature strength compared to standard grades such as 304. This grade can be considered as an evolution of the standard grade 304. The increased chromium and nickel content gives it better oxidation resistance while silicon improves carburizing resistance. It is sometimes said to be equivalent to grade 309 but in fact 309 has a higher chromium content and no Si. The relatively high carbon content gives it strength at high temperatures. This steel is mainly used in heat-resistant applications and environments with strong corrosion, especially compounds containing sulfur or chlorides. It also has resistance to sea breeze corrosion and corrosion in chemical environments. AISI 309 has a high temperature resistance up to about 1,100 °C in an oxidizing environment without significant deformation. This is also the reason why AISI 309 is used in high temperature applications.

Mechanical properties of AISI 309 steel:

309 steel has relatively good mechanical strength and hardness, but not as good as Martensitic or Ferritic stainless steels. However, the ductility and machinability of this steel are very good. It can also maintain stable mechanical properties over a wide temperature range.

Main chemical composition of AISI 309:

- Cr (Chromium): 23%-25%

- Ni (Nickel): 12%-15%

- Fe (Iron): Remaining (majority)

AISI 310S | 1.4845 | SUS 310S: Is a heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel with relatively high load-bearing capacity. It has good corrosion resistance in sulfur environments even at temperatures above 600 °C. Embrittlement caused by long-term immersion at 500-900 °C can be eliminated by solution annealing at about 1100 °C. Can be used in oxidizing environments up to 1050 °C. Easy to weld by all types of processes. It is used for furnace parts, heat exchangers, burners, in the chemical and petroleum industries.

Chemical composition of AISI 310S:

- Cr (Chromium): 24%-25%

- Ni (Nickel): 19%-22%

- Fe (Iron): Remaining

- C (Carbon): Lower than 310 steel (usually below 0.08%) for corrosion resistance.

AISI 904L | UNS N08904 | 1.4539: A low carbon, high chromium-nickel-molybdenum-copper austenitic stainless steel, resistant to intergranular corrosion at temperatures up to 400°C. Resistant to sulfuric acid at any concentration up to about 60°C, as well as to phosphoric and organic acids. Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride ion environments. Applications in highly corrosive areas where aggressive chemicals are used, e.g. seawater-cooled machinery and plants and offshore components. In the chemical industry where resistance to attack by pure acids as well as acids containing chloride ions (especially sulfuric acid), organic acids and mixed acids is required over a higher pressure and temperature range. The improved crevice corrosion resistance allows for use in applications where scaling is anticipated.

Comparison of corrosion resistance of AISI 904L vs AISI 304 & AISI 316: AISI 904L has stronger corrosion resistance, especially in applications requiring high strength in chemical environments. 904L steel can also operate at high temperatures up to 900° C (1,650° F) but is not the best choice for environments where temperatures exceed this limit for long periods of time.

Chemical composition of AISI 904L:

- Cr (Chromium): 19%-23%

- Ni (Nickel): 23%-28%

- Mo (Molybdenum): 4-5%

- Cu (Copper): 1% - 2%

- Fe (Iron): Remaining

- Mn (Manganese): 1% - 2%

- N (Nitrogen): 0.1%-0.2%
